The Oakland Running Festival was honored by Oakland Magazine as the city's best sporting event, beating out the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball entities of the city.

Oakland Magazine Editor Judith M. Gallman tabbed the first time event as "an ambitious undertaking" and noted that "the course got better and better as the race progressed."

She also mused that "Oakland and especially Oaklanders shined every step of the way, from City Hall to the hills to the flats and back again."
